New Feature : "About the size of"
1) The Shuttle mission is a boon for these peaches...
"Shuttle Discovery Astronauts undertook a second spacewalk on monday...Their main objective was to remove and replace a control moment gyroscope (CMG) that had not worked properly on the ISS since the June of 2002. The orbiting platform has four gyroscopes that maintain its proper position relative to Earth. Each CMG weighs 300kg (660lbs) and is about the size of a washing machine."
and, from the same article
2) "A suitcase-sized piece of foam fell away from the Columbia orbiter during its launch, punching a hole through heatshield panels in the left wing."
(Thanks for the helpful comparisons, BBC News science/nature)
3) Hodgkins Lymphoma survivor: "It was about the size of a golf ball," said Sandra Davies. "Absolutely protruding from my neck." and, more mysterious still, "Apparently it was twice the size on the inside as it was on the outside."
4) Not BBC but possibly my favourite...
"Inverters have a lighter-socket plug on one end, and on the other they have one or more standard electrical sockets like the ones in the walls of your home ... Standard inverters usually start around the size of a hamburger"
and another new feature: Almost Spoonerisms
e.g.
1) Battlestar Galactica...Startlebat Elastica
2) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory...Choccy and the Charlotte factory

questions (from irc, about the 'about the size of' feature):
bigger on the inside than outside like dr who's tardis?
what are the bbc writing?
or who are they writing for?
seeya,
josh
ps did i mention that this new feature is great? apparently not. it's great!
Thanks! and yes, presumably the principle of the golfball tumour is based on that of doctor who's tardis, and the opposite effect with Billie Piper's mouth (although I've never been in either)
I'm not sure I understand your bbc question. The quotes are mainly taken from science sections of the bbc website, if that helps...
i just don't get these comparisons that the bbc news uses. is there some kind of post-metric consumer device units system that i don't know about or do nasa rely on suitcases and dishwashers for estimations? i guess i just don't see why they can't use their science brains and use some kind of scientific measurements. is a cubic metre too complicated?
ah i see. It certainly made me wonder whether US national confidence has gone that bit too far over the past 30 years, with cracks in the shell being patched up increasingly creatively to the point where they're using discarded luggage and white goods.
"It's almost exactly the size of a washing machine...and the shape...and, ok yeah it was a bloody washing machine. Happy now? OK if we get this fixed before the rest of the IKEA kitchen unit falls out?"
I don't like these new-fangled modern systems. I will stick up for traditional measures and they can come and arrest me if they want.
In proper units, those gyroscopes are the size of 1/8000 of a football pitch*.

* In cross-section, of course**.
** But then gyroscopes have four dimensions, don't they?

Haha great link! But why has someone on the internet always got there first?! Grrraaarrgh...
I really like the concept of almost-spoonerisms, which I talk in quite a lot, like a fecund sandwich.
packet jatato?
BBC news site today - the highly technical shuttle mission continues...
"Stephen Robinson rode the ISS robotic arm to reach the shuttle's underbelly, where he was able to remove the strips by pulling them with his fingers."
by pulling them with his fingers
I ask you.
Yeah, I could have done that. I've got fingers, and I'm quite tall. Easy.
